Halo: Campaign Evolved Xbox ad teases Sony with physical disc, but needs download like PS5

Sony’s announcement that it’s ending production of game discs in early 2028 has prompted protests. Some fans recognize an opportunity for Xbox to win over disgruntled gamers. Microsoft may have obliged with the recent promotion of Halo: Campaign Evolved. However, as on PS5 consoles, its physical status has limitations.
Physical-first marketing
On July 2nd, the publisher’s social media post included a green checkmark next to “Physical discs”. It may have been a coincidence, but other ads for Xbox games haven’t emphasized their format.
Fueling speculation that Microsoft was taking a dig at Sony, the shooter's official site added a related Q&A. Responding to a question about whether there would be a disc in the box, the answer reaffirmed that buyers would receive physical media and “tangible items.”
Despite the eagerness to market its traditional format, the Halo: Campaign Evolved PS5 release also ships on a Blu-ray. In both cases, a download is mandatory before players can experience the Combat Evolved remake. Once the files are installed, it’s no longer necessary to have an active internet connection.
Without early access or a pre-download, the Halo: Campaign Evolved release date will introduce some extra wait time. Regardless, it has a key advantage over exclusively digital games. After completing the single-player mode, consumers can choose to sell or trade their purchase.
Is a digital-only Xbox inevitable?
Recognizing the bad press Sony is suffering, Microsoft could delay any similar announcement. That said, it’s likely only a matter of time before more, if not all, Xbox titles are digital only. With the memory shortage impacting console sales, PlayStation made the decision in part to protect profits. Selling PS5 games on the PS Store is more lucrative, and its rival is facing even gloomier finances.
Many analysts believe neither the PS6 nor Project Helix will ship with disc drives. Still, Microsoft’s rumored disc-to-digital program could offer a compromise to collectors. Xbox fans who own a Halo: Campaign Evolved physical game disc would be able to convert their purchase into a digital license.
