The folks at Digital Foundry have now chimed in with their take on GTA 6 not having a physical edition at launch. Unfortunately, gamers who buy GTA 6 in retail stores will only get a download code in the game box and not the actual game. This sparked an intense debate online about the nature of game ownership.

GTA 6 has reportedly been in development since 2014, with Rockstar committing full-scale to the game after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. It has taken Rockstar over 7 years of active development to get the game ready for launch. GTA 6 is now scheduled to release on November 19, 2026. However, you can pre-order the game right now for the Sony PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.

You can also pre-order a boxed copy of the game from stores like GameStop. This is where things have gotten controversial for Rockstar. GTA 6 won’t have a true physical edition at launch. The boxed copy that you pre-order today or buy at launch will only give you a download code for the game. This has reportedly become a headache for retail chains like GameStop, which rely on selling physical game copies.

Many have speculated on the true motive behind Rockstar choosing a digital-only release for GTA 6. Some argue that Rockstar is trying to save money by skipping the production, packaging, and shipping of actual game disks. Others point to the lack of a true physical edition as a strategy to minimize leaks. Some also think that Rockstar is just trying to stop people from selling their copies of GTA 6 after playing the game.

The folk at Digital Foundry have now presented some compelling reasons why Rockstar is not offering a true physical edition of the game. While DF did repeat and go over arguments like preventing leaks and saving the cost of physical game disks, the most interesting one is that GTA 6 is not yet finished, and work continues actively on the game.

GTA 6 has already experienced two delays, as it was initially intended to launch in 2025. It was later delayed to May 2026. Rockstar then delayed the game again to the current release date of November 19, 2026. This tells us that GTA 6 has faced some developmental issues, as Take-Two has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 is running 18 months behind the initial planned release date.

So, DF's suggestion that a major reason why GTA 6 doesn’t have a physical edition at launch is that Rockstar is still finishing the game makes sense. For a game to be put onto a disk, it needs to be finished well before the actual release date, as it takes time for the production and shipment of game disks to retail locations across the globe. If GTA 6 is not really ready and Rockstar is still scrambling to meet the release date, it makes sense that GTA 6 doesn’t have actual game disks.

This also lines up perfectly with rumors of GTA 6 physical disks coming some months after the November 2026 launch. By then, Rockstar would’ve pushed out a patch or two to fix major bugs and issues before putting the game on disks to sell to collectors and avid fans. Then again, we may also not get a physical release ever. Only time will tell how the situation develops.
