With the impending death of discs, more PlayStation fans are considering piracy. The PS5 jailbreak unlocks access to homebrew apps, emulators, and local backups of some digital games. This exploit also forces notable compromises and can be used to violate copyright laws.

Sony confirmed that starting in January 2028, new titles will no longer ship on discs. The downfall of physical games on PlayStation consoles has protesters seeking alternatives. Installing a PS5 jailbreak can be a gateway to piracy. However, with limitations, it could allow buyers to keep local backups of their digital purchases.

Jailbreaking the PS5

A Polygon article noted that traffic for PS5 piracy-related search terms has risen since the announcement. Audiences who wouldn’t normally consider modifying consoles are curious about the process. In reality, the exploit was a boost for the homebrew and emulation scene, but may not be practical for many supporters of physical media.

The PS5 jailbreak takes advantage of a vulnerability in the PlayStation hardware. Injecting custom code bypasses security measures that had previously thwarted hackers. If successful, testers run tools and apps not normally compatible with the system. Performance benchmarks with Linux-based titles have gained mainstream attention.

In many countries, the jailbreak itself is not illegal. Yet, it also enables users to boot copies of some current-gen titles. The ability to store backups of digital games that will not be sold on discs is what most intrigues Sony’s critics. Still, even individuals who own the software may break copyright laws.

Is piracy ever justified?

For now, the Japanese gaming giant likely isn’t panicked about advances in PS5 piracy. The exploit requires consoles with older firmware, and installation isn’t straightforward. Additionally, players can’t connect to the PlayStation Network, which blocks them from multiplayer features.

Once the transition from physical to digital games is complete in 2028, the situation may have changed. Typically, significant progress with circumventing security is made later in a system’s lifecycle. At the same time, the controversy has encouraged more parties to contribute to these efforts.

The ramifications of violating copyrights will keep some gamers away. Other individuals believe they should be able to keep copies of software they paid for on discs or various storage media. Laws often disagree, but opponents of digital marketplaces argue that consumers don’t actually own anything. They point to Sony's recent removal of over 550 movies and TV shows from accounts.
