Sony faces an unfixable PS5 vulnerability as BootROM keys are dumped and shared publicly
Right before 2026 kicked off, a significant security breach was made public when the PlayStation 5’s ROM keys were leaked online, potentially enabling modders and hackers to jailbreak Sony’s console down the line.
According to the Cyber Sec Guru, PlayStation 5 ROM keys are essentially hardware codes stored in the PS5’s processor. These keys were publicly dumped online on 31 December, 2025 and quickly spread around numerous forums and wikis.
For your average gamer, this doesn’t equate to a PS5 jailbreak overnight, but for the more tech-savvy individuals who like to poke around the deeper layers of Sony’s hardware and software, it could make things much more straightforward.
The leak in question involves BootROM codes. In layman's terms, they’re the first line of defense when you turn on your PS5. These codes essentially verify that the bootloader is legit and hasn’t been tampered with.
Now that these keys are out in the wild, hackers and modders could potentially decrypt and reverse-engineer the bootloader to figure out how the console’s boot process works while ultimately aiming to run unsigned code natively on the console. The worst part is that these bootloader keys are burned directly into the PS5’s silicon, making it next to impossible for Sony to roll out a simple update or patch to millions of PS5s.
Sony would likely have to redesign the PS5 for future revisions or recall existing ones, which is highly improbable given the tremendous cost.
While this won’t result in an overnight jailbreak, it certainly lowers the barrier for homebrew developers. The complete list of PS5 bootloader ROM keys is already publicly available on the PS5 Developer Wiki, including hex strings and keyseeds.
This isn’t the first time Sony has dealt with hackers and modders bypassing PlayStation security through vulnerabilities. Back in the days of the PS3, a cryptography gaffe allowed modders to install homebrew software on the console. This led not only to widespread piracy but also to cheating in online games like Call of Duty.
The PS5 ROM key leak could lead to similar issues down the line, such as hackers running unsigned code or finding easier ways to back up and run bootleg or pirated PS5 games. However, that would take a fair bit of time, as other security layers remain untouched, even as it opens the door to potential homebrew on Sony’s latest game console.
