The Anbernic RG477V arrives among a sea of recent vertical retro gaming handheld releases. To recap, its effective predecessor, the RG406V (curr. $195 on Amazon), had mainly the Ayaneo Pocket DMG for company. By contrast, the RG477V has the more affordable Retroid Pocket Classic to contend with, as well as the forthcoming Pocket Vert and a rumoured TrimUI Brick refresh.
Ultimately, the Retroid Pocket Classic is much cheaper than the RG477V while still packing a punch thanks to its Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 chipset. Nonetheless, the RG477V has a few advantages in its corner. For one, Anbernic's new device has Hall effect joysticks, which sit beneath ABXY buttons and a four-way dpad. Additionally, Anbernic punctuates these controls with a 4.7-inch IPS display that outputs at 1,280 x 960 pixels with a 120 Hz refresh rate that can handle Black Frame Insertion (BFI) while maintaining 60 FPS gameplay.
Meanwhile, a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chipset underpins proceedings. Equipped with a Mali-G615 MP6 GPU and an octa-core CPU split between one Cortex-A715 and seven Cortex-A510, the Dimensity 8300 delivers emulation performance up to the Nintendo Wii U and PlayStation 2, in part thanks to its 6 GB or 8 GB optional RAM configuration.
Also, Anbernic installs a 5,500 mAh battery that supports up to 27 W charging, as well as a modem that delivers Bluetooth 5.3 and WiFi 6E connectivity. The RG477V starts at $199.99 with 128 GB of storage but no microSD card. Alternatively, 12 GB RAM and 256 GB of storage variants retail for $40 more and rise to $269.99 with a 256 GB microSD card in Black or Retro Grey colour options. Currently, Anbernic anticipates that it will raise prices by $20 across the board on December 23 at 10:00 UTC.
