The launch of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is probably happening in just a few days, but there is already quite a lot to read and see, especially on the Chinese Weibo network. This includes screenshots of the camera app that reportedly confirm that Xiaomi and Leica have developed a true optical zoom camera with a variable aperture, similar to the Sony Xperia 1 VII, but this one is based on a significantly larger 200 megapixel sensor. More or less surprisingly, this upgraded telephoto lens was not the focus of a Q&A session with the Xiaomi president that was streamed on Weibo today. Unfortunately, no all news he shared are good.
According to Lu Weibing, a significant price increase for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra in China is inevitable, not only due to the sharp rise in memory prices. The new camera components are also substantially more expensive, such as the significantly larger periscope module with APO Leica optics, which is shown below in a size comparison with the one from the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. The new 1-inch Omnivision OV50X main sensor also offers new features, such as a significantly higher dynamic range than the LYT-900 in the predecessor thanks to LOFIC technology.
First official Xiaomi 17 Ultra camera sample
An initial official photo from the 23mm main camera of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra demonstrates the phone’s capabilities, with its low ISO of 64 and a shutter speed of 1/50s. Xiaomi uses an f/1.67 aperture, and in typical Leica fashion, the photo is not artificially brightened in dark areas. The image above illustrates the approximate appearance of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and green is expected to be one of the available color choices.
