After a recent PlayStation Portal update, the handheld has enjoyed a surge in popularity. Sony and Honda now plan to offer the mobile gaming option to passengers in their upcoming Afeela 1 EV. Unfortunately, a key new feature that unlocked access to more PS4 and PS5 games may not be available.
Sony Honda Mobility announced that its technology-packed vehicle will support PS Remote Play. The PlayStation Portal boosts its infotainment system with a seat-mounted display. Tapping into the EV’s speaker array, earbuds may not be necessary for crisp audio.
The press release warns that a 15 Mbps internet connection is necessary to reduce buffering. Gamers can opt for Wi-Fi when available, but the Afeela 1 EV should include 5G cellular capabilities.
Whether the pre-installed PlayStation Portal will have advantages over toting around the handheld is debatable. Sony doesn’t provide specifics, but the display shown in the included photo looks larger than the device’s 8-inch LCD screen. Players can also use a DualSense controller more comfortably while seated.
Gamers may be better off with a conventional Portal
The biggest drawback of the integration is that it could depend on a PS4 or PS5 console running at home. Meanwhile, the standalone device can now play purchased PS5 games independently. Cloud streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium supports an even larger library of titles. Sony Honda Mobility did not mention whether the unit in the Afeela 1 EV may gain these capabilities after launch.
Other attempts to bring premium gaming to EVs have failed, as Tesla can attest to with its ill-fated Steam app. Still, facing declining console sales, Microsoft, in partnership with LG, plans to introduce Xbox Game Pass to other vehicles.
For PlayStation fans intrigued by the Afeela 1, the car is slated to ship in California initially, by the middle of 2026. Although the premium model will cost $102,900, a cheaper trim should follow the next year.
