PlayStation Portal OLED possible after Sony handhelds appear at Wi-Fi Alliance

Early in 2026, insider Kepler_L2 claimed a PlayStation Portal OLED refresh was in the works. After new filings at the Wi-Fi Alliance, Sony may be preparing to unveil the upgraded gaming handheld. Alternatively, the company could be making battery replacement easier to comply with EU right-to-repair regulations.
As reported by Zuby_Tech on social media, model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105 surfaced on the organization’s site. CFI-Y1000, CFI-Y1001, and CFI-Y1016 identify the existing cloud streaming-capable solution. The difference in numbering hints that the changes may be more than minor revisions.
Just a Wi-Fi upgrade?
Despite the Wi-Fi Alliance's focus, it’s unclear whether a new PlayStation Portal will offer Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or 7. Right now, the hardware is limited to the Wi-Fi 5 standard, which can throttle speeds in some scenarios. Nevertheless, many gamers consider an OLED panel a better reason to upgrade.
Unfortunately, the filings don’t confirm Sony is replacing the LCD screen in the mobile PS5 console companion. Still, in January, Kepler_L2 was confident an unannounced model would debut in 2026, noting strong sales. Later in June, he told followers the OLED system’s release date was still on track.
Why the Portal screen is subpar
Although owners describe the current 1080p panel as bright enough, a PlayStation Portal OLED lurks as a welcome option. It would reduce smearing in fast-moving games, potentially at a higher refresh rate, and boost contrast. HDR would also make the gaming handheld feel less like a compromise compared to playing on a 4K TV.
Sony has already implemented several updates that benefit the device. Owners no longer necessarily have to depend on Remote Play from an at-home PS5 console. PS Plus Premium subscribers can cloud stream select titles. The manufacturer also maximized the existing screen with a 1080p High Quality mode.
A less exciting possibility is that, like with the Switch 2, the new hardware would target Europe. Right-to-repair regulations have forced companies to allow for more straightforward battery swaps. Regardless, even with a potent PS6 handheld rumored, it seems Sony isn’t finished tweaking the Portal.
