A super affordable gaming handheld alternative from Xiaomi? Redmi Pad 2 9.7 gaming review

Having put Xiaomi’s entry-level tablet (priced at around $160 (available on Amazon.com) through its paces in our in-depth review, we’re now taking a closer look at the gaming capabilities of this fairly compact, lightweight tablet. In this gaming review, we’ll set aside the GPU benchmarks and see how much graphics power remains for everyday use. We don’t expect much from the Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen 2, though. Why? You can read the reasons in this review summary.
Frame rates of current Android games
This affordable Xiaomi tablet can handle simple Android games at solid frame rates
We’ll examine the Redmi tablet’s gaming capabilities using three Android games. Despite its budget price, the Pad 2 9.7 offers many of the features that are important for a great gaming experience: a large display, a long-lasting battery, and the in-house Game Turbo mode.
Due to the underpowered Qualcomm Adreno 610, demanding games like Genshin Impact are playable only at minimum settings. Even with low graphics settings, we managed a meager average of just 27 frames per second in our review. The entry-level tablet cannot reach the maximum frame rate of this fantasy action RPG on Android (60 fps). If we increase the detail settings, the Redmi Pad 2 9.7 falls below even the 20-fps mark.
The Xiaomi tablet performs better with less graphically intensive games. In PUBG Mobile, however, casual gamers have to settle for up to 50 fps at low detail settings. We also can’t enable the HD setting. Here, the Redmi tablet likely falls short due to its outdated SoC hardware.
High-frame-rate gaming beyond 60 fps isn’t possible even with older games like Dead Trigger 2. We measured an average frame rate of about 58 fps. However, light gaming is certainly possible with the Redmi Pad.
