Samsung users pay a lot of money for this: Xiaomi’s budget tablet with hidden premium “feature”
Anyone buying an affordable tablet has to accept certain compromises. This remains true even in 2026, although the Redmi Pad 2 9.7 offers very good value for money. The Xiaomi tablet currently starts at around $160 (available on Amazon.com) and impressed in our review with its high-quality build, modern design, and 120 Hz display.
However, this display has poor viewing-angle stability, which may disappoint some users, though others might interpret it as a kind of security feature, what is increasingly coming into focus.
When viewed head-on, the Redmi Pad 2 9.7’s panel appears bright, and its colors are appealing. However, as soon as users look at the LCD from the side, the display darkens significantly and the colors become distorted. At extreme viewing angles, on-screen content is almost impossible to make out in daylight, even up close.
Could the cheap Android tablet’s poor viewing-angle stability actually be an advantage?
What at first glance seems like a clear drawback, since the general rule is that the wider a display’s viewing angles, the higher its quality, turns out to be a hidden benefit for privacy in everyday use?
Users often buy expensive privacy screen protectors when using their devices on the bus, train, or at a café. With the Redmi Pad 2 9.7, this feature comes at no extra cost. Only those sitting directly in front of the 9.7-inch display can see the content clearly and with high contrast. When viewed from the side, the screen quickly darkens and becomes difficult for people sitting nearby to read.
Of course, the poor viewing-angle stability isn’t really a plus. For a movie night on the couch with friends, the Xiaomi tablet’s display is a real drawback. However, those who primarily use their tablet alone might view this supposed weakness of the budget tablet from a completely different perspective, especially given the new Samsung feature in the flagship segment.
