Sony continues to make the PlayStation Portal more useful, albeit over a year after its initial release. From today, a PlayStation 5 is no longer required to use the PS Portal thanks to the adoption of cloud gaming support via Sony's PlayStation Plus service.

The PlayStation Portal (PS Portal) has been around for over a year at this point. Arguably though, Sony's return to handheld gaming was missing crucial features at launch. For instance, the company waited until mid-June before adding the option of connecting the PS Portal (curr. $199 on Amazon) to public Wi-Fi networks that require web browser authentication.

Now though, Sony has delivered what could be the device's most significant new feature to date. Rather than hyperbole on our part, even Sony refers to the change as one 'that many fans have been asking for'. Specifically, the company has finally added support for cloud streaming at 1080p and 60 FPS, which has somehow been missing since the Portal's release.

Unfortunately, there are some caveats. On the one hand, cloud streaming requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, which runs to $159.99 annually. With that being said, the change now means that one can stream PlayStation 5 games without needing a dedicated console. On the other hand, Sony stresses that it is only rolling out a beta version for the time being.

The same update also reduces the Portal's minimum volume level. Moreover, it is now possible to change PlayStation Link device settings on the Portal directly. Please see Sony's latest PlayStation Blog post for more details.
