World of Warcraft has been the reigning champion of MMOs for an incredible 20 years and 11 expansions, showing no signs of slowing down. The game is evolving at an unprecedented pace, with its latest expansion, The War Within, launching in August 2024. Fans won’t have to wait long for the next chapter, as the upcoming expansion, Midnight, is slated for a reveal in summer 2025. Blizzard has also unveiled a detailed roadmap outlining their plans for the months ahead, keeping the excitement alive for the game's dedicated community.
However, many now consider the graphics and the classic tab-targeting combat system to be outdated. A "WoW 2" that could modernize these mechanics is a constant topic of conversation in the community. In interviews, the question of a World of Warcraft successor has become a standard subject - most recently in a discussion between Games Radar and Ion Hazzikostas, Game Director at Activision Blizzard. To the surprise of many, Hazzikostas didn’t dismiss the idea outright. Instead, his response to the question about a potential WoW successor was intriguingly open-ended:
"Theoretically, at some long, distant point down the line, that may be a question we grapple with seriously," he says. "But, for the time being, we have a huge, vibrant, and growing player community that we're excited to serve."
So a WoW 2 is no longer out of the question. However, as long as World of Warcraft works in its current version, Activision Blizzard will continue to expand it, as Hazzikostas emphasizes:
"When we have this vibrant world with millions of players, our priority is to serve them as best we can - to keep expanding the journeys, the worlds we build, and every step of the way we make the improvements we think will best appeal to the modern audience."
