New reports indicate that StarCraft is set to receive a new third-person shooter. The StarCraft-based spin-off shooter is expected to be announced at BlizzCon in September 2026. Notably, the project is being spearheaded by former Far Cry executive Dan Hay.
Dan Hay is also the man behind the Far Cry series’ heyday at Ubisoft Montreal, joined Blizzard after leaving Ubisoft in 2021. Given his extensive experience creating breathtaking open-world action experiences like the critically acclaimed Far Cry 3, he might be the perfect lead for Blizzard’s StarCraft shooter.
This report comes from Windows Central, and according to the outlet, StarCraft’s spin-off shooter is expected to arrive alongside new expansions for Diablo IV and World of Warcraft. This is the third time Blizzard has tried to revive its sci-fi RTS into a shooter after numerous cancellations.
Rumors about the StarCraft shooter surfaced in 2024 via Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier’s book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. In the book, Jason reported that Blizzard, now operating under Microsoft, was quietly working on a StarCraft-based shooter.
He later confirmed this in subsequent interviews, stating:
Yes, that is a project that, as far as I know, is in development, or at least as of the time I wrote this book, it was in development. Which is to say yes, they are working on a StarCraft shooter, and StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard.
He also analogized Blizzard’s persistence with StarCraft to a line from the movie Brokeback Mountain. He said:
This felt like such an interesting and useful nugget to include in my book, because it really shows that – what’s that Brokeback Mountain line, ‘I can’t quit you’? Blizzard cannot quit StarCraft shooters; they just can’t say goodbye to them.
However, details about Blizzard’s upcoming StarCraft shooter are pretty sparse. We still aren’t sure whether it will be solely single-player or incorporate multiplayer elements.
For now, Jez Corden from Windows Central has confirmed that Blizzard’s StarCraft project is in active development. This news comes amid Blizzard’s rebound following its merger with Activision and Microsoft. Gamers have seen a few StarCraft-themed items in Diablo IV and Hearthstone, showing that the IP is still thriving.
Unfortunately for fans eager for more content from this particular universe, Blizzard hasn’t officially confirmed the existence of the StarCraft shooter. Still, given the studio's history of making big announcements at BlizzCon, the project may be revealed in December, with a potential 2027 release planned.
