New ambitious Far Cry game emerges from the ashes of Far Cry extraction shooter

Ubisoft has seen quite a lot of development changes that have affected progress for several games. Far Cry 7 will be the next mainline game in the long-running franchise, but there was news recently about there being an extraction shooter element. Turns out that’s no longer the case and that there’s another Far Cry game that has been approved.

The information comes from Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, and it states that the Far Cry extraction shooter, codenamed Maverick, has been cancelled. Earlier reports claimed that there would have been a separate single-player campaign as well, but that might have been the only part that survived. Apparently, another “really ambitious” Far Cry game based on Maverick, codenamed Kodiak, passed its conceptualization stage earlier this month and will forgo the extraction shooter component.

That’s not all, apparently; Far Cry 7, codenamed Blackbird, is now “seemingly on a good path forward.” It will also have a multiplayer component that will allow multiple players to explore the world together. It could be a start to a new franchise of Far Cry games, of course, depending on how well it performs.

Kodiak is still several years away, while Far Cry 7 was originally expected to release in Fall 2025. It is unlikely that we’ll see a new Far Cry game this year either, but there are still five months to go. Whether releasing a new game close to GTA 6 is a good idea, Ubisoft will have to think long and hard about that.
