Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has a record-sized world – why fans are worried

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth already offered a massive world to explore, but Square Enix appears to be raising the bar even further with Revelation. While the developers haven't revealed the map's exact size, they say the final entry in the remake trilogy will feature the largest game world in the history of the Final Fantasy series.

As Square Enix explains in an overview of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation – later highlighted by Genki on X – players will be able to explore the entire planet aboard the Highwind airship. Unlike in Rebirth, the various continents and regions will be connected into a single seamless world from the very beginning. While the continents are still separated by oceans, players will be free to travel between them using the Highwind. All of the continents from Rebirth will return, but each will feature new content and gameplay mechanics.

More land – but more variety?

While Square Enix is presenting the game's enormous world as one of its biggest selling points, many fans on Reddit are responding with skepticism. Interestingly, most aren't concerned about the world's size itself, but rather about how Square Enix plans to fill all that additional space. In an interview with Automaton, director Naoki Hamaguchi promised that the world would never feel empty. According to him, every region will feature its own unique activities and interactive elements. Fans, however, already think they know what that means – and they wouldn't be happy if they're right.

Throughout the Reddit discussion, Rebirth is repeatedly criticized for its abundance of minigames and repetitive World Intel objectives. As a result, Chadley, the character responsible for assigning many of those activities, is mentioned time and time again. Many fans worry that Revelation could simply introduce even more optional side activities without offering enough variety. Whether Square Enix can strike the right balance between a massive open world and engaging content will become clear in spring 2027, when Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 (currently available on Amazon for $608) and PC.
