Halo: Campaign Evolved player counts during early access may signal an unexceptional launch. New Xbox numbers show how far it trails Forza Horizon 6 ahead of its release date. Steam data is also middling, but account and connectivity issues have slowed Microsoft’s remake.

Early access statistics often don’t reflect how a game will fare after launch. Even so, Microsoft’s Combat Evolved remake has a modest rank in the TrueAchievements weekly Xbox chart. When combined with an unremarkable Halo: Campaign Evolved Steam player count, there may be cause for concern.

For Premium and Collector’s Edition buyers, the Halo: Campaign Evolved release date was July 23rd. Other Xbox, PS5, and PC fans need to wait for the shooter to arrive on July 28th.

Facing tough competition

TrueAchievements uses its large database of member activity to estimate how well a newcomer performs. The modernized classic has debuted at 12th among the top 40 most popular Xbox games. While the site considers that admirable for an early access contender, it’s well behind another first-party title.

According to the comparison, the remake has 58.1% of the Forza Horizon 6 pre-release player count. On Steam, the difference is even more stark. The open-world racer attracted 178,000 concurrent drivers before its standard launch date. Meanwhile, the Halo Studios project has topped at just short of 20,000.

What's realistic for the latest Halo game?

Microsoft is relying on its popular franchises to reverse declining profits. That said, it may not be projecting record-breaking sales for Campaign Evolved. The developers have added new content, but it’s largely a faithful recreation of the 2001 title. Some buyers don’t believe there is enough incentive to pay extra for Premium and Collector’s Editions.

The Xbox game can still serve a key role by expanding Microsoft’s audience on the rival PS5. PlayStation Store pre-order rankings hint at strong adoption for the first Halo shooter to land on the console. It can also draw subscribers to Game Pass as a day-one addition.

Other factors could be contributing to mediocre Halo: Campaign Evolved Xbox and Steam player counts. On its release date, connectivity and performance issues led to mixed reviews on Valve’s marketplace. They have rebounded to mostly positive, but console users have suffered Xbox Live and PSN downtime since.
