Halo: Campaign Evolved already playable before release date and review embargo

Some gamers are already exploring the Combat Evolved remake ahead of the official unlock time. Redditors report that discs load for buyers lucky enough to have the physical game. The early access Halo: Campaign Evolved release date isn’t until July 23rd, and reviews go live the same day.
A physical gaming perk
It’s predominantly owners of the $199.99 Collector’s Edition that are testing the shooter. On the franchise’s subreddit, Quick-Ease5117 shared a success story with both the Campaign Evolved Xbox and PS5 discs. Causing controversy, they require downloads before playing. Once the poster installed the update, the Microsoft title booted.
While Sony is hammered over abandoning physical media in 2028, collectors have a reason to gloat. Nintendo can attest that boxed copies sold at retailers often surface prematurely. Meanwhile, the Premium Edition is digital only, and the Standard alternative won’t become playable until July 28th.

As a remake, there may not be many surprises, but recent leaks have been sparse. The Halo: Campaign Evolved review embargo hasn’t arrived, limiting the number of impressions. One unanswered question is how much additional content Microsoft has included. It has been particularly secretive about the Operation: Meteorite prequel missions.
With missions accessible, spoilers are now hitting Reddit and social media. Fans should also see some performance impressions, although Digital Foundry was encouraged by its first look at the game.
Campaign Evolved pre-loads
Followers not fortunate enough to possess a disc can at least pre-load the shooter. For Xbox, PS5, and PC players, downloads opened on July 22nd at 8 AM PDT/5 PM EST. The exception is Steam Standard Edition buyers, who will need to wait until July 23rd. PS5 Standard Edition owners also can’t prepare in advance until July 26th.
The early access snafu may not be detrimental, but Microsoft is likely anxious to read Halo: Campaign Evolved reviews. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is depending on the company’s most lucrative franchises to boost profits. There have also been reports of dysfunction at Halo Studios leading up to its release date.
