If you've always been hesitant to dive into 4X strategy games because of their intimidating complexity, Legion Gold might be the perfect place to start. The game is widely regarded as particularly beginner-friendly and is currently available on Steam with a 90% discount for just $0.99.

Once they click, grand strategy games can become one of the most addictive genres around. Getting started, however, is often a daunting experience – something Legion Gold aims to avoid. Compared with genre heavyweights such as Crusader Kings III and Europa Universalis IV, it is generally considered much more approachable. The game is currently 90% off on Steam, reducing the price from $9.99 to $0.99. According to SteamDB, this matches its all-time low. The downside: the 4X strategy game is not supported on Steam Deck.

Legion Gold is set during the era of Roman expansion, but that doesn't mean you're limited to playing as Rome. Instead, you can also choose from a variety of Italic, Gallic, Britannic and Germanic tribes. Rather than telling a scripted story, the game focuses entirely on building your empire into the dominant power of the ancient world. To achieve that, players must do far more than conquer cities. You'll also expand your own settlements, manage workers and maintain a steady supply of the three key resources: food, wood and ore.

The game also features a streamlined diplomacy system that allows players to forge alliances, negotiate peace treaties and arrange tribute payments. Combat takes place on a separate battlefield, though not in the style of a traditional real-time strategy game. Players position their troops and decide how aggressively they should advance. Once the battle begins, however, combat plays out automatically as your units execute the orders you've given. As a result, success depends less on frantic micromanagement and more on careful preparation.

According to Steam users, Legion Gold offers not only an easy introduction to the genre but also an engaging gameplay loop. Many players also say the game's seemingly simple mechanics conceal a surprising amount of strategic depth. That said, the automated battles aren't to everyone's taste, and several users report technical issues. As a result, the game currently holds a Very Positive rating, with 84% positive reviews across roughly 120 user ratings. Even so, players who have been put off by the complexity of traditional 4X strategy games may find Legion Gold well worth a look.
