The Modos Flow 13.3-inch E-Ink touchscreen is now available.
Modos Flow aims to win over customers with a 13.3-inch E-Ink touchscreen that connects to a laptop via a USB-C cable and is designed to make working on the go more comfortable. The mobile monitor is now available for pre-order.

Modos Flow was announced several months ago, the mobile monitor is now available for pre-order on Crowd Supply. The model with a black-and-white panel costs $699. The manufacturer lists the version with a color display at $799. Shipping within the U.S. is free, worldwide shipping costs $18.

Orders are expected to ship in mid-December. This pricing makes the mobile monitor relatively expensive – an Asus ZenScreen with an OLED panel, for example, costs only around $229 on Amazon. However, Modos Flow is said to be much more comfortable to read thanks to its E-Ink panel, especially in bright daylight. Just like an e-reader, Modos Flow uses reflected light instead of a backlight, which means readability improves the brighter the surroundings are.

The model with a color display also features front lighting for nighttime use. Depending on the model, Modos uses either an E Ink Carta 1300 or a Kaleido 3 panel, each with a resolution of 3,200 x 2,400 pixels and a pixel density of 300 PPI. Modos advertises a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a latency of less than 100 milliseconds – fast for an E Ink panel, but the pixel response time is generally not sufficient for gaming or comfortable video playback.

Furthermore, the full 60 Hz is only available when an additional power source is connected, a maximum of 40 Hz is possible via a single cable. The monitor connects to a laptop via a USB-C cable, which also supplies power. The monitor supports touch input, but stylus support is only available on the more expensive version with a color display.
