The trend toward compact, pocket-sized e-readers continues, as the Xteink X4 Pro is soon to be followed by the Boox Picco – another model that, with its 3.97-inch display, is significantly smaller than a smartphone. Onyx is now offering a sneak peek at the first model in the brand-new Boox Tile series.

With a screen diagonal of 4.3 inches, the Xteink X4 Pro is one of the most compact e-readers on the market, while Onyx has so far limited itself to models similar in size to a smartphone, such as the Boox Palma 2 Pro ($399 on Amazon). That is now changing, as Onyx has confirmed in a teaser that the company is planning a brand-new, particularly compact Boox Tile product line.

The first model in this series is called the Boox Picco. As the first teaser images show, the device resembles a simple, white smartphone with a flat bezel and a slightly wider chin below the display. However, with a screen diagonal of 3.97 inches, the Boox Picco is significantly smaller than even the most compact mainstream smartphones currently available. The e-reader is equipped with an E-Ink panel that can display only grayscale, but it does feature front lighting, allowing the Boox Picco to be used comfortably even at night.

Books can be stored on a microSD card. If Onyx takes a similar technical approach to Xteink, the Boox Picco is not a full-fledged Android device, but rather an e-reader whose software is primarily designed for reading e-books. However, Onyx has not yet confirmed any further details regarding the Boox Picco’s specifications, price, or availability. Since the first teaser images have already been released, the launch shouldn’t be too far off.
