$99 e-reader with magnets and backlight: Xteink unveils X4 Pro

The Xteink X4 Pro is the successor to last year’s Xteink X4. The concept remains the same – Xteink packs a 4.3-inch E Ink display with a pixel density of 219 PPI into a 72-gram body, making it one of the smallest e-readers in the world. The Pro model is designed to address the biggest shortcomings of its predecessor. Although the new model is lighter, the battery capacity has increased from 650 mAh to 1,100 mAh.
Thanks to new front lighting with adjustable color temperature and brightness, the X4 Pro is comfortable to use even at night. Another new feature is that the display is a touchscreen, so you can turn pages not only with the two buttons but also by touching the screen. E-books are stored on the included 16 GB microSD card, and the device supports memory cards up to 256 GB.
Clever: Thanks to built-in magnets, the Xteink X4 Pro can be attached to the back of Qi2-compatible smartphones such as the HMD Skyline ($399 on Amazon). E-books can be transferred wirelessly via the accompanying smartphone app. Alternatively, the display can also show business cards, a calendar, or even a boarding pass for a flight, which is convenient, since E-Ink displays can retain the last image displayed even when the device’s battery is depleted.
Pricing and availability
The Xteink X4 Pro e-reader is now available for $99 plus $8 shipping in the manufacturer’s online store. However, it is currently listed as sold out.
