Suunto Core 2 launches with 15-month battery life and new features
At first glance, the Suunto Core 2 may look like a smartwatch, but it is actually a classic ABC watch, just like the older Suunto Core ($149 on Amazon). That means it's a rugged outdoor digital watch with a range of additional features. Compared to a smartwatch, this has one major advantage: longer battery life. The watch runs for 15 months on a single CR2032 battery, which users can then replace themselves.
Despite the replaceable battery, the body is waterproof up to 10 ATM, allowing the watch to be worn while swimming and diving. The display features a more durable Gorilla Glass cover, which is also designed to improve readability – Suunto claims the dial is 40 percent brighter in daylight. The optional backlight can now be set to green or red. Red light is better for avoiding glare at night.
The Suunto Core 2 not only displays the time and date but also offers a range of additional features. These include a barometric altimeter, a depth gauge that can display depths of up to 2 meters below the water’s surface while snorkeling, a pedometer, an ambient temperature display, a moon phase display, a stopwatch, a timer, an alarm clock, a severe weather alert, and a compass. The round display measures 1.3 inches diagonally.
Pricing and availability
The Suunto Core 2 is now available in Europe for €179 in the manufacturer’s online store, but is not yet listed on Suunto's U.S. store.
