Leaker expects Sony PS6 and Xbox Helix hardware subscription model for next-gen consoles

Apple is launching a new hardware subscription model in partnership with Klarna. The program will reportedly allow users to lease iPhones, MacBooks, Macs, Apple Watches, and iPads from Klarna for 24 to 36 months for a monthly fee. The users will also have the option to pay the devices off early, keep them after the period ends, return them, or upgrade to newer models. Noted leaker Kepler_L2 thinks Microsoft and Sony might follow Apple's lead and offer a subscription model for next-gen consoles.

Kepler_L2 stated on X that they “definitely expect Sony/MS to do the same for next-gen consoles”. Assuming this actually happens, gamers will be able to essentially lease a Sony PS6 or an Xbox Project Helix for a monthly fee. 

While Sony has not publicly revealed any financing plans for the PlayStation consoles, Xbox is looking into alternative payment options for the Xbox Series S | X to make them easier to afford. We could see this option extend to the next-gen Xbox Helix when it launches in 2027. However, Xbox Helix might also surprise many with its price.

For Sony, the choice is even easier. Sony’s business model relies on selling millions of consoles. The company is reportedly going to do this by designing the PlayStation 6 to be as affordable as possible. A leasing option that allows gamers to own a PS6 for just a low monthly fee can help the company boost sales in an environment where gamers are afraid that the next-gen consoles will cost an arm and a leg.

That said, a hardware subscription model does have its disadvantages. The biggest is perhaps the state of ownership around the product. 

You technically don’t own the hardware that you lease. You are only paying for the right to use the machine as the manufacturer sees fit. This also means that Sony or Microsoft can potentially take away your access to the hardware at any time if you breach their terms, even if you’ve already paid hundreds of dollars in subscription fees.

So, while leasing is a nice option to have, Sony and Microsoft first need to ensure that the next-gen Xbox Helix and PS6 are as affordable as possible to buy outright.
