PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 works the best on Linux, despite having over 90% of its total user base on Windows. However, within the Linux ecosystem, RPCS3 recommends a specific distro.

RPCS3, the world’s most popular PS3 emulator, has come a long way over the last few years. The emulator can now run an overwhelming majority of PS3 games and is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD operating systems. So, whether you are a Windows user or have switched to a Linux distro or macOS, you can rest assured that RPCS3 will work just fine.

However, as we recently learned, RPCS3 runs best on Linux. This means that users will get the best performance when they are running a Linux distro like Ubuntu or SteamOS or something else. This also raises another interesting question: Which Linux distro does the team at RPCS3 actually recommend?

RPCS3 answered this exact question on its official X account. RPCS3 recommends CachyOS for PS3 emulation, while also cautioning that “there’s no single correct recommendation”.

Online discourse on forums like Reddit is in agreement with RPCS3’s recommendation, as CachyOS is designed to be fast and responsive on modern CPUs. The OS is also highly regarded for its gaming capabilities.

For instance, users note that games on CachyOS enjoy higher FPS, low input lag, and, unlike many other Linux distros, stuff just works out of the box. The last point is perhaps the biggest reason why many gamers don’t shift from Windows to Linux. The pain of setting everything up and ensuring everything works smoothly can be a source of huge friction.

Head over to the official CachyOS website, where you can download the OS. You can also download CachyOS Handheld Edition from the same site for portable gaming consoles like the Asus ROG Ally, Valve Steam Deck, and Lenovo Legion Go S (get one on Amazon).
