DLSS 5 on RPCS3: RPCS3 team responds to users modding DLSS 5 into PS3 emulator

Nvidia has officially launched version five of Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). Nvidia calls DLSS 5 a “3D-guided neural rendering” technology that improves game realism through the use of AI while preserving artistic intent. However, there are many who see DLSS 5 as “AI slop”. The team behind the RPCS3 PS3 emulator is also among this group.
Recently, some users began experimenting by modding DLSS 5 into RPCS3. The RPCS3 team is not too keen on the visual "slop" generated by injecting the DLSS 5 DLL into RPCS3. The RPCS3 team also called out the gaming industry for pushing “more upscalers and frame generation to hallucinate games and hide their lack of optimisation”.
Moreover, responding to a user opining that “RPCS3 would benefit from DLSS upscaling if it could be implemented”, the RPCS3 team explains that the PS3 emulator’s goal “is to be as accurate as possible, optimising down to the CPU cycle level, whilst avoiding game-specific hacks”.
So, if you saw users adding DLSS 5 into RPCS3 and were hoping that the option might officially become part of the PS3 emulator sometime in the future, it doesn’t seem likely. The only image upscaling solution offered by RPCS3 is AMD FSR1, and only because it is a spatial rather than a temporal upscaling method like DLSS and XeSS. You can configure FSR from inside RPCS3’s Settings menu.
Finally, DLSS 5 is only available in NBA 2K27, which is launching on September 4. We don’t expect to see DLSS 5 in many titles until next-gen Nvidia GeForce GPUs launch, as DLSS 5 has a huge performance cost. Unfortunately, the next-gen RTX 60 GPUs are unlikely to be here until late 2027; the release date can even slip to sometime in 2028.
