SteamDB is merging with Nexus Mods, finally getting full team support

Most members of the PC gaming community would be familiar with both SteamDB and Nexus Mods. While the former is a platform that records useful information about games, the latter is the biggest platform for modding games. Soon, SteamDB will fall under the umbrella of Nexus Mods, but what does that mean for the community?

The announcement was made on the Nexus Mods website, explaining the reasoning behind this merger. It states that managing and maintaining SteamDB alone was getting too challenging for xPaw – the co-creator of the platform – and he had been looking for a trustworthy team since early this year to hand over the site.

xPaw said:

What mattered most to me was finding a team that understands what it means to be responsible for something the community depends on, and that shares my belief in building useful tools for gamers. SteamDB will continue to be SteamDB. The goal is not to change what makes the project special, but to give it the resources, development capacity, and long-term stability that I could no longer provide alone. I have full confidence the team will be able to continue improving the project for gamers, developers and publishers alike.

The announcement also explains that in the short term, nothing with SteamDB or Nexus Mods will change. Both sites will work just as they have for years, as xPaw works with Nexus Mods during this transition. SteamDB will continue under the same identity and community, providing the same useful information about games people play.

In the long run, Nexus Mods hopes to further improve and grow the SteamDB platform. They will continue to rely on the community for donated Steam keys to help track game files, but also start funding keys themselves. The team effort will also allow them to address long-standing improvements, improve game coverage, and more.

As for Nexus Mods, they hope to use the database to improve their mod manager since the workability of a mod is heavily dependent on the game version, which SteamDB tracks meticulously. Integrating version info and how it affects mods will make modding a more seamless and reliable experience.
