The RTX 2080 Ti refuses to die as modded 22GB "turbo" cards appear on eBay for around $500

It’s been nearly eight years since Nvidia launched its RTX 2000-series GPUs, and they’re still holding up fairly well in gaming, especially in the AI industry. The RTX 2080 Ti is now resurfacing on eBay thanks to a Hong Kong-based seller. The seller and modder is listing RTX 2080 Ti GPUs with 22 GB of GDDR6 VRAM for roughly $500, effectively doubling the Turing flagship GPU’s 11 GB VRAM pool without requiring buyers to open up the cards and solder the VRAM themselves.

The only gripe for AI enthusiasts with these 22 GB RTX 2080 Ti listings is that buyers don’t get to choose their own card. The listing only guarantees that buyers will get a “Turbo”-style RTX 2080 Ti with a blower-style cooler but with twice the VRAM under the hood. The seller clearly states that the brand customers receive depends on what happens to be on hand during shipping, adding, “it depends on what we have in hand.”

A modification process happening at scale

This lines up with how these mods are done at scale, as repair shops performing the same upgrades on batches of cards describe a process that involves “removing the original chips, installing 2 GB modules and testing the card under load.” The current listing photos back up the claims, depicting a Gigabyte-branded card alongside a huge box of already-modded RTX 2080 Ti GPUs and a GPU-Z screenshot confirming 22,528 MB of usable memory on a functioning system.

There isn’t any magical wizardry going on behind the scenes. It’s a physical hardware mod. The RTX 2080 Ti’s GPU core, the TU102-300, supports larger memory configurations, so modders swap the stock 1 GB VRAM modules for 2 GB GDDR6 modules and then reconfigure a handful of “strap resistors” on the PCB. This changes how the BIOS reads the board’s memory layout, tricking the system into recognizing the newly soldered VRAM modules. It’s pretty much the same trick used to convert an RTX 3070 GPU with 8 GB of VRAM into a 16 GB modded variant.

Whether the roughly $500 price tag for a modded RTX 2080 Ti with 22 GB of VRAM makes it a bargain depends entirely on what’s available on the second-hand market. A 24 GB GDDR6 RTX Titan sets you back nearly $800 on eBay, while the local LLM favorite, the RTX 3090 with 24 GB of faster GDDR6X VRAM, costs nearly $1,200 on secondary markets.
