The RPCS3 emulator is now available for the PS4 via an unofficial port

When the PlayStation 4 launched, many fans were disappointed to learn Sony wouldn't make the console backward-compatible with its predecessor, the PlayStation 3. For years, the PlayStation 3 library remained exclusive until the public release of RPCS3 in 2012.
Even with RPCS3's significant developments, some titles still haven’t reached a playable state. Still, it's come a long way, with most fan-favorite PS3 titles now in a highly stable state. That said, it still requires decent hardware to deliver desirable results. That makes it even more noteworthy that some independent developers from the homebrew community have managed to port the emulator to the PS4.
The State of RPCS3 on the PS4
According to X user Vinas, a group of independent developers operating under the label “Roberix Studios” has ported the RPCS3 emulator to the PlayStation 4. The project is in its early stages and not yet available to download. The emulator can boot the PS3’s firmware successfully, but it doesn't yet support games.
Roberix Studios has a Discord server where they discuss the project's progress. Users who want a first look at further developments can join to keep up with the latest project news.
Future Plans for RPCS3 on the PS4
Currently, Roberix is focusing on optimizing the emulator for the PS4’s hardware. They are specifically targeting shader compiler optimizations to reduce CPU load. Still, given the hardware the emulator requires, it is hard to imagine graphics-intensive PS3 games running on the PS4. The PS4 has a custom AMD Jaguar 8-core processor with a 1.6 GHz base clock, which frankly isn’t much. It also has a custom AMD Radeon GPU and 8 GB of unified DDR5 memory. At best, one can expect it to emulate some 2D titles or lower-end 3D titles.
