Zelda-like indie RPG with 92% positive reviews drops to just over $1 on Steam

In Prodigal, players take on the role of Oran, who stole from his parents years ago and subsequently left his hometown. After their deaths, he returns to Vann's Point – where he isn't exactly welcomed back with open arms. As Oran uncovers the mysteries surrounding the town, he also has to confront his own past. Alongside classic fantasy themes, the story explores topics such as guilt, forgiveness and personal relationships.
In terms of gameplay, Prodigal clearly takes inspiration from the Zelda games of the Game Boy Color era. From the central town, players venture into various dungeons focused primarily on exploration and puzzles. Sometimes switches need to be activated in the correct order, while other puzzles require clever use of movable objects. New items, in turn, open paths to previously inaccessible areas, making it worthwhile to return to locations already visited. Collectibles, small minigames and a relationship system with six possible romances provide additional variety. Combat is comparatively simple: Enemies are usually defeated with a few direct attacks, with no complex combos or elaborate combat system.

In its review, KeenGamer particularly praised the varied puzzles, well-designed dungeons and convincing Zelda-like feel. The lively game world, likable characters and atmospheric presentation were also well received. Criticism, however, was directed at technical issues, occasionally repetitive gameplay and the significantly weaker second half of the story. The romance mechanics are also fairly simple from a gameplay perspective. Overall, however, the positive impressions clearly outweighed the negatives, with the publication awarding the game 8 out of 10 points. Prodigal fares even better on Steam, where 92% of more than 630 player reviews are positive.
