As a player, your goal will be to survive in the frozen Canadian wilderness, across a map divided into several regions. You’ll need to manage your basic needs, fish, hunt, and carefully plan your actions to survive. 

Explore the environment and search for more than 100 items to increase your chances of success. The world is alive, and random events will occur. You'll also need to avoid various dangers, such as diseases and hostile wildlife.

Alongside the survival mode, Wintermute lets you follow a story divided into five episodes. You play as pilot Will Mackenzie and a doctor named Astrid Greenwood, who are stranded after a plane crash caused by a geomagnetic disaster. Finally, a challenge mode is also available. Each challenge lasts between 1 and 3 hours, and each success will earn you rewards in the survival mode.

On Steam, 88% of the 125,759 reviews are positive. Although The Long Dark doesn't feature supernatural creatures like those found in other games, players praise its challenging gameplay.
