Squad 44 takes players to the battlefields of World War II, focusing on uncompromising realism rather than fast-paced arcade action. The tactical multiplayer shooter is free to try on Steam until October 13. At the same time, a 70% discount brings the price down to $5.99.

Squad 44, formerly known as Post Scriptum, takes players to the battlefields of World War II. The settings range from the German invasion of France and the Normandy landings to Operation Market Garden and the fighting in the Pacific. There is no traditional single-player campaign. Instead, the game focuses on large-scale multiplayer battles with up to 100 players fighting simultaneously. Depending on their faction and chosen class, players head to the front lines as ordinary infantrymen, medics, machine gunners or tank drivers, among other roles. Working alongside their fellow soldiers, they must capture strategically important positions and defend them against enemy attacks.

Gameplay revolves around one thing above all else: teamwork. Unlike Call of Duty or Battlefield, success depends less on quick reflexes and racking up as many kills as possible. Instead, communication, cautious advances and coordinated attacks are essential. A single hit can be fatal, while enemies are often difficult to spot among trees, buildings and trenches. Alongside traditional infantry combat, tank battles, artillery bombardments and extensive logistics operations also play an important role. The arsenal includes more than 150 historical weapons and over 120 vehicles, including famous tanks such as the Sherman, Tiger and Panther.

On Steam, Squad 44 is particularly praised for its authentic wartime atmosphere, excellent sound design and tactically demanding battles. Many players especially appreciate the realistic tank combat and gameplay that consistently emphasizes teamwork. Criticism, however, focuses on inconsistent performance, various bugs and the steep learning curve. Many players see the small player base as the biggest problem, as finding sufficiently populated servers can sometimes be difficult. Overall, 74% of more than 25,000 user reviews are positive.

Free weekend and 70% discount on Steam

Squad 44 normally costs $19.99. Until October 13, however, players can try the tactical shooter completely free of charge on Steam. At the same time, a 70% discount brings the price down to $5.99 until October 15. According to SteamDB, the game was already available for $3.99 on October 1. While the current deal is significantly cheaper than the regular price, it does not mark a new all-time low. Squad 44 is rated as “Playable” on Steam Deck.
