Courtesy of the Qualcomm Dragonwing Q8 SoC, the AYN Odin 3 is among the most powerful ARM-based handheld gaming consoles on the market. This makes the AYN Odin 3 a prime candidate for PS3 emulation using RPCS3, especially now that recent tweaks have improved RPCS3 performance on ARM64 platforms.

RPCS3 has made rapid progress over the past few years, both in terms of game compatibility and performance. Recently, RPCS3 officially announced on X that the PS3 emulator now runs 60% faster while using 25% less power on ARM64-based systems. This is great news for handheld gaming consoles that use ARM chips.

Case in point, a Reddit user has shown that the AYN Odin 3 handheld gaming console can now run inFamous using RPCS3. Running the Armada OS, the handheld console reportedly played the game between 40 and 60 FPS.

This is a pretty good result considering that PS3 emulation is notoriously hardware-intensive. inFamous was also one of the best-looking games of its era, with its open-world structure and eye-popping particle effects. So, it was always going to be hard to emulate inFamous on an ARM-based handheld gaming console.

Looking at the video posted by user LunarCantaloupe in r/OdinHandheld, it is pretty clear that performance, while sufficient for a single-player experience, is not completely stable. The game fluctuates between 40 and 60 FPS, with big frame rate drops during rapid traversal. This is a common issue in many modern games as well, where a game gets CPU/memory bottlenecked. Since PS3 emulation is already quite CPU-intensive, a power-efficient mobile CPU like the Qualcomm Dragonwing Q8 getting overwhelmed in this case is not surprising.

All in all, RPCS3 seems to be at a place where you don’t have to worry about the emulator struggling on ARM SoCs. As long as you have enough power under the hood and Linux, if you want the best performance, RPCS3 will do a stellar job of emulating PlayStation 3 games.
