Nvidia confirms DLSS 5 is coming to RTX 40-series GPUs, but Ada Lovelace owners have no release date yet

Nvidia has confirmed DLSS 5 for RTX 40-series GPUs, but the Ada Lovelace lineup still has no arrival date for the neural rendering tech. Nvidia officially launched 3D-guided neural rendering as a Blackwell exclusive for RTX 50-series GPUs on September 3 in NBA 2K27. So far, the technology has shipped in a single launch title alongside a new GeForce Game Ready Driver. Currently, it works on RTX 50-series Blackwell desktop GPUs, RTX 50-series laptop GPUs, and GeForce NOW.
Backward compatibility with RTX 40-series GPUs is possible because Ada Lovelace GPUs feature fourth-generation Tensor Cores, which already support the FP8 format DLSS 5 uses. In contrast, RTX 30-series GPUs have third-generation Tensor Cores that lack FP8 support. That is primarily why Nvidia has remained silent regarding DLSS 5 for the RTX 30 series.
The tech will ship, but at an undisclosed date
As for a release date, Nvidia has not announced one. The company says RTX 40-series GPUs will receive support after further RTX 50-series optimization work, due later this fall, and has confirmed that desktop players will get only a basic on/off toggle instead of in-depth control over DLSS 5’s 3D neural rendering.

The biggest difference is that DLSS 5 isn't an upscaler and doesn't provide frame generation, even though it appears in the same settings menu. Earlier versions of DLSS tackled reconstruction problems; the engine drew something specific, and DLSS’s job was to infer it with a correct answer to train against.
3D-guided neural rendering, by contrast, has no correct answer. It takes a frame’s color buffer and motion vectors after the game has already rendered them and adds realistic lighting, subsurface scattering, and contact shadows, which are most noticeable on character model faces.
DLSS 5 has been quite demanding and required two RTX 5090s when it debuted at Nvidia's 2026 GTC event. After six months of optimization work, however, GPU headroom requirements have decreased, allowing a single RTX 5090 to run the technology at respectable framerates, though Nvidia has yet to fully test itor further optimize it.
The framerate hit with DLSS 5 enabled is still quite noticeable, with Nvidia stating:
“DLSS 5 is our most computationally demanding model to date. Since we initially announced it in March, we’ve achieved a 5x performance gain, and there’s more to come. Our current focus is optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50 Series, with model updates expected later this fall. Once the RTX 50 series is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 series.”
Modders have already pulled DLSS 5 from a beta build of NBA 2K27 and gotten it unofficially running on RTX 40-series GPUs. While the tech has drawn both criticism and praise in some titles, the performance cost is real, but so is the visual fidelity.
