Nvidia DLSS 5 confirmed to launch later this year with neural rendering

Historically, major DLSS version upgrades coincided with graphics card releases. With the RTX 60 series’ fate somewhat uncertain due to market conditions, Nvidia has decided to break that pattern. At GTC 2026, the company showed off DLSS 5.0 alongside a bunch of popular titles such as Resident Evil Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Unlike previous DLSS iterations that used transformer/CNN models, DLSS 5 uses what Nvidia calls a real-time neural rendering model. It essentially harnesses the power of AI to make the game’s colour and motion vectors more photorealistic.

As you can see in the images above, the results are all over the place. It undoubtedly makes some games prettier, while Unreal Engine 5 games, such as The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion: Remastered, get completely transformed. Regardless, it is too early to draw conclusions because DLSS 5 is likely not finished, and Nvidia could be actively polishing it before a wider launch.
Digital Foundry states that Nvidia had to use two RTX 5090 GPUs in tandem for the DLSS 5 demo. This was likely necessary to run the games at their maximum potential without any VRAM bottlenecks. DLSS 5 will be coming to RTX 50 series devices this fall, with no word about its availability on older graphics cards.
