Sony had to finally talk about its decision during the latest earnings call, and when asked about it, the executives gave the expected answer about digital revenue vs physical discs. This suggests the company will not back down from its decision.

After weeks of silence, Sony was finally forced to respond to the backlash from its controversial decision to kill physical game discs starting January 2028. During its latest earnings call for FY26 Q1, the executives were asked about the decision, and it looks like Sony is confident that there won’t be any negative impact on its business.

Sony’s chief financial officer Lin Tao was asked a couple of questions about the termination of discs and what the impact would be up until 2028. Tao responded by saying that because content digitization has progressed significantly, Sony put a lot of thought into this decision and will be cautiously moving forward with it.

To another question asking about the impact on revenue, Tao said that as of now, they haven’t seen an impact on the business. As for when the change comes into effect, the majority of the sales are already digital, so there won’t be any negative impact on the business then, either.

The question also brought up public backlash, to which Tao said they need to think about how to respond to the feedback. While Sony does that, one thing is clear: it is not going to roll back its decision. Public backlash has been strong, and the Don’t Kill the Disc petition has now crossed 350,000 signatures. There was also a conversation about boycotting Sony, but the company seems laser-focused on revenue numbers for now.
