Kingdom Hearts 4 release date doesn't ensure a PS5 disc to satisfy physical game fans

Players dreading the end of PS5 discs breathed a sigh of relief at the D23 Expo. Square Enix and Disney narrowed the Kingdom Hearts 4 release date to late 2027. The launch window is before PlayStation stops printing Blu-rays for new titles in early 2028. Even so, it doesn’t guarantee physical game buyers will enjoy boxed copies.

Can KH4 avoid a delay?

At D23, attendees saw a trailer featuring Sora visiting Coco and the Land of the Dead. After around 7 years in development, the video confirmed slow but steady progress. That gives hope that the action RPG will emerge on time, although some followers still fear a postponement.

Even a short Kingdom Hearts 4 release date delay could have dire implications for a PS5 disc version. Sony intends to accommodate physical game advocates until January 2028. Titles shipping before then can expect restocks of retail cases holding tangible media. Meanwhile, new arrivals become exclusively digital.

Unless Sony makes exceptions for nearly complete projects, the deadline appears firm. Regardless, Square Enix may focus its efforts on the PlayStation Store sooner. Recently, the publisher revealed that only 10% of sales are for packaged units, rather than downloads. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is due in Spring 2027, but director Naoki Hamaguchi isn’t certain about a disc option.

Physical gaming on competing platforms

Kingdom Hearts 4 is also coming to PC, Switch 2, and Xbox consoles. Both Nintendo and Microsoft are experiencing declining revenue from physical sales. Yet despite the added costs, Nintendo seems hesitant to abandon cartridges. However, because the Disney adventure will likely have a large file size, a Game-Key Card requiring downloads is a strong possibility.

Microsoft already relies heavily on digital marketplaces. Unlike on the PS5 and Switch 2, the upcoming Kingdom Hearts Collection I–III is an all-digital release. Xbox is reportedly planning a disc-to-digital program as a compromise to collectors.

A reason for optimism is that Square Enix lists physical and digital versions of the next Kingdom Hearts game on its website. That said, a potential Collector’s Edition could include a redeemable code along with trinkets.
