Sequels to The Legend of Zelda movie likely after casting news for Nintendo film

Nintendo has not confirmed that sequels will follow The Legend of Zelda release date in April 2027. Even so, a casting update suggests that it could be the first in a series of movies celebrating the franchise. Deadline revealed that Uli Latukefu signed a “multi-picture deal” to play the evil Ganondorf.

Nintendo is thinking ahead

Securing the services of Australian actor Latukefu for a longer term doesn’t guarantee more Zelda movies. Still, having a potential recurring character on board speeds up the process of creating follow-ups. Whether those projects become a reality may depend on the success of the initial effort.

Many fans believe that Nintendo and Sony Pictures plan a trilogy regardless. Producer Shigeru Miyamoto previously stressed that the format reaches audiences that Switch or Switch 2 games cannot. The gaming giant has also opened theme parks and explored new merchandising options to promote its popular IPs.

Gamers know that Benjamin Evan Ainsworth has taken on the role of Link, with Bo Bragason co-starring as the Princess. Otherwise, the plot of The Legend of Zelda movie remains a mystery. It’s suspected that the film is based on several Zelda games rather than a single entry.

With the Ocarina of Time remake scheduled for the Switch 2 in 2026, marketing tie-ins are tempting. Yet, it’s possible that viewers will see elements of Breath of the Wild and Twilight Princess. Nintendo relied on that model with the Super Mario Bros. Movie. Mario Galaxy titles inspired its sequel, but it had an original narrative.

More casting rumblings

Besides the news that Latukefu will portray Ganondorf, there have been other developments regarding the upcoming film. Yvonne Strahovski and Dichen Lachman may also appear in the motion picture. The late Sam Neill could also join the cast in his final appearance in cinemas.

The live-action spectacle is reportedly in the post-production phase, making the current The Legend of Zelda release date realistic. Some gamers consider the influx of rumors hints that a trailer or announcement is imminent.
