The new Star Fox Switch 2 game could be a prelude to a full-length motion picture. More leaks hint that Illumination will produce a Fox McCloud feature. Nintendo films have become more frequent, as the company looks to expand its console-centric audience.

After Fox McCloud surfaced in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, fans anticipated a new Switch 2 game. Sure enough, Nintendo just revealed a Star Fox title with a June 25th release date. However, the gaming giant may have more plans to celebrate the Arwing pilot in cinemas.

Courtesy of DanielRPK, Global Box Office reports that a Star Fox movie is in development. Illumination, which has produced several Nintendo films, is also named. While the source doesn’t have a perfect track record, this isn’t the first rumor about the rail shooter transitioning to the big screen.

Takaya Imamura, the artist responsible for the original characters, has fueled this speculation. GamesRadar+ highlighted how the designer rejoiced when seeing Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Earlier, when addressing a possible flick focused on his creations, he remarked, “I wouldn't be surprised if they've already got a plan in place.”

A Star Fox 64 movie?

Specifics about a potential movie are scarce, aside from the fact that it’s likely to be another animated production. Nintendo has increasingly sought to connect its motion pictures to console titles. Yet many fans are apprehensive about the art style showcased in the Star Fox Switch 2 game. The pilot appears more realistic and less cartoonish than in the latest Mario film.

Other followers wonder if a Star Fox movie would retell a familiar story. There has been criticism for recycling the same mercenary-squadron saga repeatedly. The new game adds more cutscenes and dialogue, but otherwise seems to follow the Star Fox 64 narrative. Even the 1997 N64 release expanded on the first SNES title.

Leaks suggest that the Kyoto-based company has already greenlit multiple cinematic spectacles. Illumination could be hard at work on Princess Peach and Donkey Kong features. Although not involved with the live-action The Legend of Zelda, it’s the next confirmed Nintendo film to premiere in May 2027.
