Activision and Paramount have announced that Call of Duty is coming to the big screen. The FPS has sold over 500 million copies globally and generated more than $30 billion in revenue as of October 2024.
According to the agreement, which was confirmed on September 2, 2025, Paramount will develop, produce, and distribute a live-action feature film set within the Call of Duty universe. However, it’s still not confirmed if the movie will be set against the backdrop of World War II, or a retelling of the Modern Warfare series, or Black Ops, for that matter. The possibility of a crossover across the different universes is possible, or Paramount could settle for an original story.
According to Variety, the deal currently focuses on one movie, but could potentially result in Paramount handling adaptations of the Call of Duty universe in the future, possibly hinting at a TV show to follow. The deal with Activision and, subsequently, a Call of Duty movie announcement is part of Paramount’s broader plans under its recent $8 billion merger with Skydance, led by CEO David Ellison, who is spearheading the studio and steering it to high-profile adaptations and investments in gaming IPs.
David Ellison stated in the Variety interview, “As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty, this is truly a dream come true. From the first Allied campaigns in the original ‘Call of Duty,’ through ‘Modern Warfare’ and Black Ops,’ I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love.
Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”
Ellison stated that they’re going to take a disciplined approach for the movie from the get-go, further adding,
“We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve.”
Activision’s Rob Kostich chipped in as well, stating,
“With Paramount, we have found a fantastic partner whom we will work to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment. The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started.”
