Jack Black teases The Super Mario Galaxy Movie sequel in 2029, as Nintendo films multiply

As The Super Mario Galaxy Movie release date arrives, a cast member is already hinting about a follow-up. On social media, D001 shared a clip from a recent Cinemex interview in which Jack Black made the reference. The voice actor for Bowser may have been joking, but Nintendo has committed to producing films more frequently.
What did Black say about future Mario movies?
In the conversation, Black appeared alongside Donald Glover, who voices Yoshi in the new movie. After singing a musical tribute to Bowser, Black said, “Don't be surprised if you hear that coming out next time. It's good.” He then added, “in 2029.”
Even if said in jest, it wouldn’t surprise fans if Nintendo and Illumination already had a concept for the next Mario movie. A 2029 release date seems logical, given that The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted in 2023. The previous film generated over $1.3 billion in revenue, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie also expected to dominate the box office.
Prior to the 2023 triumph, Nintendo films struggled to establish a foothold in cinemas. Most notably, the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. failed to attract a massive audience. However, the gaming giant has now assumed a larger role in production, with Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto involved. In concert with Illumination, it has strived to more authentically represent characters.
In November 2025, President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that supporters should plan for a “consistent cadence” of movies. They appeal to viewers across several generations, even those who don’t own a Switch or Switch 2. Miyamoto agrees that the format has a more “timeless” quality than a single game.
Rumored Nintendo films
Before a sequel to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might surface, multiple flicks could emerge. The Legend of Zelda will premiere in May 2027, but rumors point to other possible releases.
Fans just learned that Fox McCloud would appear in the new Mario movie. With a Star Fox game leaked for a summer arrival, followers could see Nintendo capitalize on the protagonist’s return. There have also been reports that a Donkey Kong picture will feature Jack Black’s former co-star, Seth Rogen.
