Report: Eidos Montreal cancels $100 million+ game in development for 7 years

Eidos Montral held another round of layoffs recently citing “changing project needs.” With this, another 124 employees were let go and it has now been reported that the layoffs were due to the cancelation of a major project that had been in development for about seven years with costs going into nine figures.
The project was called ‘Wildlands’ and the report from Insider Gaming citing sources claims it had been in development since 2019. Over the course, the game went through four different game engines with teams struggling to finalize a narrative direction. Furthermore, the budget went over a hundred million dollars and forced cancelation of other titles that were in development at the studio, one of them being a new instalment for the Deus Ex franchise.
Moreover, the game was reportedly nearing completion and was said to release later this year. It was in the debugging phase, which makes the cancelation even more surprising.
The report also states that footage of the game showed an open-world third person action adventure that looked a lot like another canceled game called WiLD by Wild Sheep Studio. It followed River, a member of teenage group called Spiritbounds. The group had the ability to use magic and ride mythical creatures. Insider Gaming reportedly can't share the footage since the source wants to keep it away from the public.
