After almost 20 years: A new Simpsons movie is on the way
The lovable yellow family from Springfield has already racked up nearly 800 episodes. So far, however, there has only been one movie – released back in 2007, the same year the first iPhone hit the market. Now, after almost two decades, The Simpsons are returning to the big screen. On September 29, 2025, 20th Century Studios officially announced a new film, scheduled for release on July 23, 2027 – almost exactly 20 years after Marge, Homer, Lisa, Bart and Maggie first lit up theaters.
The first Simpsons movie premiered on July 26, 2007, and became a major success, grossing more than $500 million worldwide. Critics praised its execution, calling it a strong leap from TV to the big screen. Given that success, few would have expected to wait 20 years for a sequel. While no official title or plot has been revealed yet, rumors suggest it could simply be called The Simpsons Movie 2.
The announcement sparked a wave of reactions on social media. On X, users responded with excitement, sharing memes and nostalgic memories to celebrate the news. Reddit, meanwhile, struck a more cautious tone. While many fondly recalled the 2007 release – “I remember the Kwik-E-Mart 7/11s!” – others questioned the timing of the sequel, with one user commenting: “Feels like it’s 10 years too late.” There was also criticism of the show’s more recent seasons, with some doubting whether its current state can support a successful follow-up. Still, one thing is clear: even after more than 35 years, The Simpsons continue to spark strong opinions.
