Surprising title of The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel leaks before Nintendo Direct

Many fans are wondering what Mario games Nintendo might unveil at the September 12th Nintendo Direct. Still, the broadcast may also feature The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, set to debut on April 3rd, 2026. Previous leaks suggested Super Mario World as the film's title. However, new domain registry activity reveals that Super Mario Galaxy is another potential name.

Kurakasis also suggested the Super Mario Galaxy name on social media. The poster now has more believers after Reddit users discovered the registered domains. Supermariogalaxy-lefilm.com and Supermariogalaxy-lapelicula.com both point to Universal Pictures' nameservers, the distributor of the sequel.

Leaker necrolipe also recently found a filing to renew a trademark for Super Mario Galaxy. It's possible that the reserved domains are for a third film, rather than the sequel. Even so, with the next Nintendo Direct imminent, the timing seems curious. Nintendo could have postponed registering domains as long as possible to avoid leaks.

What makes Super Mario Galaxy an appealing movie concept

Super Mario Galaxy, later remastered, is a 2007 Wii release that's considered one of Nintendo's most successful Mario games. The 3D platformer is recognizable for its unconventional space environments. The plot of The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel is uncertain, but now some fans anticipate Mario exploring a drastically different world.

Prior Nintendo Direct presentations included trailers for the 2023 film. It wouldn't be surprising that, as part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary celebration, Nintendo gives a sneak peek at the next film. 

Other gamers are now speculating what the rumored movie title means for a 2026 Switch 2 game. Even if the next 3D Mario is unrelated, Nintendo may release a compilation that includes an older Super Mario Galaxy project.
