The September 12th Nintendo Direct is an estimated 60 minutes, which is enough time for unexpected announcements. Fans expect part of the broadcast to honor the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary. A leaker who predicted recent Nintendo events anticipates a new game featuring the plumber. Fans are already speculating about whether viewers could see a follow-up to Super Mario Odyssey.
SwitchForce made a string of successful predictions, including the timing of the Indie World and the next Nintendo Direct. Following official confirmation for the September 12th broadcast, he made a curious social media post. His "They buy the new systems for the mustache" comment was in response to another possible hint from Andy Robinson. The Video Games Chronicle Editor-in-Chief described himself as being in a "big Mario mood."
A 2020 Nintendo Direct during the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary unleashed a wealth of new titles. Super Mario 3D All-Stars consisted of retro games like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Super Mario Bros 35 was a free multiplayer battle royale offered to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Paper Mario: The Origami King and Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit were other new titles featured.
A reimagined 3D Mario plaformer may be inevitable
Also debuting at the last anniversary celebration was Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. While Nintendo fans would appreciate an upgraded re-release, a new 3D Mario game would better meet the expectations of a system seller. With a new Super Mario Bros movie expected in April 2026, Nintendo could plan to release a Nintendo Switch 2 game in that timeframe.
Most gamers believe that the company won't debut a 3D platformer too soon after Donkey Kong Bananza. Still, fans could see an initial teaser for a Super Mario Odyssey sequel at the next Nintendo Direct. Also, reports indicate that only part of the same development team worked on the recent Donkey Kong title. That gives gamers hope that the wait for a new 3D Mario experience may soon come to an end.
