After years of rumors, leaks, and a high-level of anticipation, Nintendo has unveiled the Switch 2, its next console and successor to the 2017 Nintendo Switch. The reveal comes via an official first-look trailer showing off the design of the new gaming handheld. It also reveals a few details about game compatibility.
The Nintendo Switch 2 as shown in the over 2-minute long video confirms earlier leaks such as a bigger display, larger and redesigned Joy-Cons, a redesigned kickstand, and a USB-C port at the top next to the audio jack among other changes.
The Nintendo Switch 2 trailer also shows us the redesigned dock with more prominent rounded corners and a glimpse of what is believed to be Mario Kart 9.
While the teaser confirms a lot of design features, there is no mention of technical specifications. So it is not certain if the Switch 2 has an LCD or OLED panel among other technical details.
According to Nintendo, the Switch 2 will play Switch 2 exclusive games and will also support both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. However, not all Nintendo Switch games may be supported or fully compatible with the new console.
Nintendo says more details will be revealed later and then proceeds to announce a Nintendo Direct for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be held on the 2nd of April, 2025. There will also be hands-on events in various parts of the world including New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas.
Registration for the hands-on events in the US begins on January 17 and runs through January 26. The hands-on events will happen in April after the announcement.
