Game Kiddy (GKD) has now launched its follow-up to the GKD Pixel, which debuted last year as a larger alternative to the Anbernic RG Nano (curr. $54.99 on Amazon). Arguably, only the Miyoo Mini serves as a true rival for the GKD Pixel 2. Instead, most companies have favoured landscape orientations for their compact gaming handhelds, such as Miyoo with the A30 or Anbernic with the RG28XX.
As pre-release information suggested, the GKD Pixel 2 surpasses its predecessor in a few areas. For example, GKD has upped display resolution from 320 x 240 pixels to 640 x 480 pixels while maintaining the same 2.4-inch panel size to achieve a 333 PPI. As a result, the GKD Pixel 2 should deliver much sharper visuals than the GKD Pixel and its 166 PPI display.
Additionally, GKD has included a Rockchip RK3326S chipset and a 1,800 mAh battery that supports 5V/2A charging over USB Type-C. These changes come with a working standby mode too, unlike the original GKD Pixel. The GKD Pixel 2 is available to purchase on Keep Retro for $79.99 in green, grey, purple and red finishes. Alternatively, Keep Retro sells SKUs with a screen protector and a protective case for $3 extra or $10 for both accessories. At the time of writing, Keep Retro hopes to begin shipping GKD Pixel 2 pre-orders 'around the end of February'.
