Handheld gaming consoles have seen a surge in popularity lately, with numerous devices flooding the market. Retro Handhelds have now revealed the Sjgam M20 Pro, and while it packs a large 7-inch display, detachable controllers, and support for over 30 emulators, it raises questions about whether it truly stands out in this competitive space, especially with a design ripoff of Nintendo's star handheld, the Switch - a sequel for which just got officially confirmed. This is not the first time Sjgam handhelds have featured an unoriginal design - the M21 from last year was no different.
The console features a 7-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. While the screen size is impressive for a handheld device, the resolution feels dated compared to modern alternatives. It’s powered by the Rockchip RK3566, a budget-friendly quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor, and a Mali-G52 GPU. This combination should be adequate for running older games, but performance will likely falter with more demanding emulators like PSP and N64.
The M20 Pro includes 4GB of DDR4 RAM and supports expandable storage up to 128GB via a TF card slot. However, the base model only offers 8GB of internal storage. Running on the Linux-based EmuELEC 4.3 operating system, the device supports over 30 emulators, covering popular platforms like PS1, PSP, and N64.
As mentioned earlier, the M20 Pro bears a striking resemblance to the Nintendo Switch, with detachable controllers and a dock for TV output via HDMI. The package also includes light guns and additional gamepads (that look a lot like Sony's PS5 DualSense controller) - however, the quality and durability of these accessories appears to be somewhat questionable, and their usefulness will likely vary depending on individual preferences. The handheld is also equipped with a 4000mAh battery.
While the M20 Pro offers decent emulator support and accessory options, its outdated hardware and lack of standout features might limit its appeal. For retro gaming fans on a budget, it could be a functional choice, but all in all, it'll likely struggle to differentiate itself in an increasingly saturated market. At the time of writing, we don't have info regarding its official price and availability.
