Lossless Scaling 3 has recently made its Steam launch, and this update promises some major improvements. Besides offering up to 20x frame generation mode, the developers promise a performance boost in the regular 2x and 3x modes, and ETA Prime has put the new version to the test.
In the video, the YouTuber first showed the basics of Lossless Scaling 3, including the different modes and other settings found in the tool. Then, ETA Prime tested the new update on the ROG Ally X, which packs the last-gen Ryzen Z1 Extreme. Among the games that were tested on the gaming handheld is Doom Eternal.
Without Lossless Scaling 3 and any other scaling, the game averaged around 60 FPS at 900p on the High preset. However, with LSFG 3.0 and the scaling mode set to "X2", the frame generation tool doubled the frames without adding too much frame latency. Another game tested is Hogwarts Legacy, which is a title that's known to push the iGPUs of the last-gen gaming handhelds to the limits (Z1 Extreme ROG Ally curr. $499.99 on Best Buy).
At 720p on the High preset, the Z1 Extreme gaming handheld got an average of about 44 FPS. With Lossless Scaling 3 set to the same settings as before, the average FPS was around 74. ETA Prime has also tested Starfield, and this game jumped from around 30 FPS to about 60 FPS.
As for the 3x mode, ETA Prime has tested it on Forza Horizon 5, and without Lossless Scaling 3, the game gets an average FPS of around 40 at 1080p on the Ultra preset. With the "X3" mode turned on, it jumps to around 100 FPS. The YouTuber notes that even in this setting, the frame generation tool doesn't add too much frame latency.
