It was surprising to many gamers that Nintendo was a partner at the Summer Game Fest 2025. The gaming giant has shunned past shows in favor of its Direct presentations. However, despite optimism, the list of Switch 2 games revealed during the June 6th broadcast was short. Now, some fans are wondering if third-party support for the new handheld will meet expectations.
Switch 2 specs include a custom T239 Nvidia chip and significantly higher memory capacity. As a result, demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 are now options on the console. Madden NFL 26, which would have taxed Nintendo's previous handheld, will also debut on the Switch 2. Still, the number of new multi-platform titles confirmed to launch on the console is relatively small.
One theory as to why the Summer Game Fest didn't feature many Switch 2 games involves dev kits. According to reports, to prevent leaks, Nintendo was very selective about who received the essential tools. That has led to potential delays in releases and uncertain futures for titles like Resident Evil Requiem. Capcom brought many previous entries in the horror series to lesser-powered Nintendo consoles. At the moment, Switch 2 owners are in the dark about when the latest Resident Evil game may arrive.
If more AAA third-party games come to the Switch 2, how they will be announced is debatable. In the past, Nintendo has preferred to reveal ports during its own events. Yet, when titles release simultaneously on the Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch 2, that puts publishers in an awkward position. Shows like the Summer Game Fest prefer to announce all platforms a game will be available on immediately.
So far, rumors of a June Nintendo Direct haven't materialized, which could provide clarification. The June 8th Xbox Games Showcase is also an opportunity for Microsoft to elaborate on its plans for the Switch 2.
