When Nintendo announced Splatoon Raiders, it also discussed plans for a significant Splatoon 3 patch. Patch notes for the 10.0.0 update are now live on the Nintendo support site. Fans of the paint-splattering shooter can also expect a new stage and more customizable weapons. Several technical improvements result from the boosted Switch 2 specs. However, the patch also makes less positive changes to the graphics on the original Switch version.
Fortunately, it doesn't appear that Switch gamers will suffer significantly from the Splatoon 3 patch. Still, Nintendo reveals that "certain elements outside the stage and unrelated to battle do not display." Affected modes include Splat Zones, Tower Control, and Clam Blitz. According to the company, the goal is to "reduce differences in game operation speed as much as possible when compared with Nintendo Switch 2".
Players engaged in combat may not notice the less detailed surroundings. Even so, the patch exposes the challenges of cross-gen gameplay. A custom Nvidia Tegra T239 chip and an increased memory capacity highlight the Switch 2 specs. The processor enables higher frame rates and resolutions in many Switch 2 games. In competitive shooters, players with superior hardware may gain an advantage. To keep play balanced between the two consoles, Switch owners may need to accept some visual compromises.
On the other hand, Switch 2 owners can expect some significant improvements with the Splatoon 3 update. Before the patch, players reported faster loading times on the new handheld, but otherwise, similar graphics. Nintendo doesn't mention frame rates or resolution but promises increased detail and smoother animations. Sadly, because of limitations of the older Joy-Cons, mouse support may not arrive until Splatoon Raiders or a future Switch 2 game.
Gamers on both Nintendo systems can enjoy Urchin Underpass, which makes its return from the Wii U era. There are also 30 new weapon kits to experiment with, which encourage contrasting play styles.
